To add ignored files to staging area
git add --force filename

Configure global cross-repository .gitignore settings (given there is a .gitignore file in ~/ dir)
git config --global core.excludesfile ~/.gitignore

Window -> Customize perspective... check Git and Git Navigation Actions in the Command Groups Availability tab

Right-click on your project, select Team -> Share Project -> Git

It is recommended to place your Git repositories outside the Eclipse workspace, since the opposite may cause performanse issues
